Blackbaud’s Financial Edge NXT

Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is nonprofit accounting software that continues to evolve through monthly updates and the transition from database view to web view. Since January 2026, these updates have introduced changes to financial reporting, allocations, payments, budgeting, purchasing, and more.

Capital Business Solutions helps nonprofits navigate these changes through Financial Edge NXT training and consulting.

September 2026 Financial Edge Software Updates

September brought two changes to purchase receipt processing and Receivables invoices, helping nonprofit finance teams manage transactions and review billing information:

  • Staff can receive, reject, or cancel purchase order line items directly through My Receipts in Expenses, without opening the purchase order in Payables.
  • Blackbaud introduced a 50-line-item limit for Receivables invoices to make invoice processing and reviews more consistent.

Staff who are used to processing receipts in Payables will need to know where that work is now done in web view, and the new invoice limit may require changes to how your organization bills for programs or services.

August 2026 Financial Edge Software Updates

In August, Blackbaud introduced several changes to its AI-assisted document processing, cash management, exports, and allocations, helping nonprofit finance teams manage daily accounting tasks:

  • New Treasury and Payables Overview pages provide easier access to financial records and payment activity. Payables Overview is available to Payment Assistant customers.
  • Organizations with a Queue subscription can generate up to 20 exports together.
  • Staff can add multiple accounts or projects to allocation pools at once instead of entering each separately.

AI-Powered Document Intelligence

On August 19, Blackbaud launched the new Document Intelligence, which uses AI to extract information from uploaded invoices and receipts and populate invoice requests and credit card transactions.

This can save time for organizations that process large volumes of paperwork. However, staff still need to verify amounts, dates, and account coding. An administrator must also enable generative AI before the feature can be used.

July 2026 Financial Edge Software Updates

Two updates were added in July to Financial Edge’s chart of accounts management and financial reporting features:

  • Chart Health Advisor identifies dormant accounts, rarely used segments, and unused records that may need attention.
  • Organizations with a Queue subscription can group up to 20 reports and schedule automatic generation and email delivery.

Chart Health Advisor can help your team identify accounts that may no longer be needed, but those records should be reviewed before making changes, especially if they’re associated with past grants or financial reports. Report groups can reduce the time spent preparing monthly reports, provided the settings and recipients are reviewed before scheduling delivery.

June 2026 Financial Edge Software Updates

June brought updates to purchasing approvals, month-end close, and budget monitoring, helping nonprofit teams manage spending and review financial activity in web view:

  • Staff can approve or reject purchase requests by individual line item or entire request, then create a purchase order once all required approvals are complete.
  • Email notifications alert staff to purchase requests awaiting approval, rejections, and purchase order activity.
  • Closing Assistant now shows real-time posting status and allows users to generate up to five General Ledger reports during month-end close.
  • The Account budget vs actual Home page tile lets staff compare account-level spending and encumbrances against selected budgets.

With purchasing approvals now available in web view, staff can handle requests without returning to database view. The new Closing Assistant features give nonprofit accountants a better snapshot of posting activity during month-end close, while the budget tile makes it easier to spot differences in spending before they become larger issues.

May 2026 Financial Edge Software Updates

If your nonprofit organization relies on Financial Edge NXT for grant accounting, budgeting, or payment processing, May’s updates are important for the team to review. Blackbaud introduced new features and moved additional functions toward web view, changing how your staff will complete tasks they work on every day.

General Ledger Allocations and Plug-In Changes

Blackbaud’s May 2026 web view transition wave included four General Ledger functions:

  • Direct allocations
  • Indirect allocations
  • Indirect cost allocations
  • Pre-allocation reports

The May wave also included plug-ins under shared processes. Teams should identify which plug-ins they use, what each one supports, and whether any existing procedures need to change.

For nonprofits that allocate shared expenses across programs, departments, or grants, learning the web view process involves more than finding the right buttons. Staff need to know how to run allocations, verify that expenses reach the correct accounts, and retain the reports needed for grant reimbursements, financial reviews, and audits.

Other May 2026 Financial Edge NXT Improvements

Blackbaud also introduced several other features that affect daily accounting work:

  • Smart Import Mapping uses Blackbaud AI to suggest field mappings during imports. Staff can review and adjust the suggestions before importing data.
  • The Project Budget vs Actual tile lets staff compare project spending against budgets without generating separate reports.
  • Users can edit allocations, allocation groups, rates, fee schedules, and pools directly from their respective pages.
  • Treasury users can edit EFT cheque format fields, including carriage return and line feed settings, to meet bank formatting requirements.
  • An updated payment-processing engine aims to reduce delays, freezes, and stalled status indicators during payment runs.

These updates may change how your team completes familiar tasks, particularly when importing financial data, reviewing grant expenses, or processing payments.

April 2026 Financial Edge Software Updates

If your nonprofit handles purchasing and financial reporting in Financial Edge NXT, April’s updates offer some useful improvements.

Staff can now manage more of the purchasing process in web view, find vendor records more easily, and choose different formats when sharing financial reports:

  • Staff can create, edit, and delete product purchase requests in Expenses through web view, including vendor details, approval rules, line items, and financial distributions.
  • Vendor searches now recognize alternate names, making it easier to locate existing records and avoid creating duplicate vendors.
  • Scheduled reports can be delivered in PDF, Excel, Excel data, or Word formats instead of PDF only.

These updates are useful for nonprofits with multiple employees involved in purchasing and financial reporting. Staff can handle more of the purchasing process in web view, find vendor records more easily, and select report formats based on what department managers or board members need. Before scheduling reports, your team should also confirm that recipients have permission to access the financial information being shared.

March 2026 Financial Edge Software Updates

Financial Edge NXT’s March 2026 updates addressed two areas that nonprofit accountants work with regularly: financial reporting and General Ledger allocations.

Updates include:

  • Reports can run in the background while staff continue working, with PDF, Excel, Excel data, and Word output options.
  • Staff can preview reports as PDFs before generating final versions. General Ledger validation and post reports are excluded from these changes.
  • Indirect cost allocations can now be completed in web view, including calculations for shared administrative expenses charged to grants.
  • Allocation groups allow up to five allocations to run in sequence, with additional options for copying rates and fee schedules and updating pool information.

For your accounting staff, the reporting changes mean less time spent waiting for reports to be generated and more opportunity to catch mistakes before they’re distributed. The allocation tools are useful when costs need to be divided among several grants or programs. Accurate rates and supporting documentation are still essential, especially when those figures are used for grant reimbursement requests.

February 2026 Financial Edge Software Updates

February’s Financial Edge NXT updates gave accounting staff more options for correcting invoices, managing recurring charges, and handling checks without returning to database view.

  • In Receivables, staff can reverse eligible invoices to create returns and make changes to return records. Invoices with existing applications have restrictions that must be addressed first.
  • One-time checks can now be voided directly from the bank account record or register in Treasury.
  • Staff can add, edit, or delete recurring invoices and their line items in Receivables.

If your nonprofit bills for memberships, programs, or services, you’ll want to make sure the people responsible for invoicing know how these functions work in web view. Reversing an invoice or voiding a check also requires more than selecting the right option. Staff need to check the transaction history first so corrections don’t create problems when accounts are reconciled.

January 2026 Financial Edge Software Updates

January’s Financial Edge NXT updates covered AI settings, payment management, allocations, and user security. For your nonprofit’s finance team, these changes offer new ways to manage staff access, handle payments, and set up allocations used regularly in grant and program accounting.

Here’s what changed:

  • Administrators can opt in to generative AI features through an organization-wide setting. Organizations remain opted out unless the setting is enabled.
  • Payment Assistant gained improved payment activity filters and the ability to submit stop payment requests without contacting Blackbaud Support.
  • Staff can copy allocation pools, rename allocations, and create new allocations from existing configurations.
  • Administrators can update user names and delete certain user records that are not linked to a Blackbaud ID.

If your nonprofit manages several grants, programs, or payment accounts, reviewing these changes with staff who use Financial Edge NXT every day is valuable to learn how to stop payment requests, verify allocation settings, and make sure user permissions reflect each employee’s responsibilities.

It’s also important for administrators to understand Financial Edge’s generative AI settings and global opt-in requirements before enabling AI features for the organization.

2026 Financial Edge Software Update FAQs

Which Financial Edge NXT Updates Require Additional Staff Training?

Updates affecting allocations, purchasing approvals, payment processing, and reporting may require staff training, especially as functions move into web view.

Capital Business Solutions provides Financial Edge NXT training tailored to the accounting procedures your nonprofit uses every day.

Is Financial Edge NXT Moving Completely to Web View?

Blackbaud is moving Financial Edge NXT functionality from database view to web view in phases, gradually retiring access to older features. Transition dates vary, and some organizations have later deadlines or exceptions.

Capital Business Solutions keeps nonprofits informed about these changes and provides training to help staff adjust their accounting procedures as new features become available.

Will Our Nonprofit’s Existing Financial Edge Accounting Procedures Still Work in Web View?

Your team can still handle many familiar accounting tasks in web view, but the process may not be exactly the same. Before moving over, make sure staff know how to complete allocations, approve purchases, process payments, and prepare reports using the features updated throughout 2026.

Does Financial Edge NXT Automatically Enable Generative AI?

Financial Edge NXT requires an administrator to opt in before the organization can use supported generative AI features. Before enabling these tools, review your nonprofit’s policies for handling financial information and understand Financial Edge’s generative AI settings.

Do All Financial Edge NXT Updates Require an Additional Subscription?

Not every Financial Edge NXT feature is available with every subscription. For example, July’s report groups and August’s export groups require a Queue subscription, while Payables Overview is available to Payment Assistant customers. Check your organization’s subscription before planning to use these features.
