News for nonprofits:

Accounting Today New Software Products:
Sage MIP Fund Accounting V. 10.2 and DrillPoint Reports

We've noted the burdens laid on nonprofits before (basically, they're held to similarly stringent accounting and reporting standards as for-profit organizations, but with far fewer resources), so it's nice to note that someone is listening - literally. The most recent release of Sage's MIP Fund Accounting solution for nonprofits includes a Customer Enhancement Portal that lets users make requests and suggestions for improving the product, and then track the progress of their suggestions. Version 10.2 also includes improvements to Form 990 reporting and improved drill-down functionality, as well as new e-mail and import capabilities.

In a similar vein, Capital Business Solutions has released DrillPoint Reports, a tool that integrates tightly with Sage's MIP system to bring data into Excel to allow richer reporting, with more filtering and formatting options, and the ability to drill down to the underlying details.

DrillPoint Reports was developed over a two year period based on feedback from Capital Business Solutions clients who used MIP and the Capital Business Solutions consulting team.  Key principles adhered to during the development of DrillPoint Reports were to provide a tool that was designed to work specifically for the MIP application rather than a more generic reporting system that could work with many applications.  Furthermore the tool should require minimal expertise on the part of clients’ staff to build powerful and pertinent reports. “We believe that DrillPoint has ultimately exceeded our original design principles” stated Peter Saul, Vice President of Professional Services.

Estimated value of a volunteer hour grows in 2005

Independent Sector, a leadership forum for charities, recently announced that the estimated value of a volunteer hour in 2005 is $18.04. This number, is up from the estimate of $17.55 in 2004. The value of a volunteer hour gives charitable organizations a tool to help quantify the immense contributions volunteers make and can be helpful in winning more volunteers and even grant funding.

Independent Sector estimated the total value of hours volunteered nationally in 2005 was equivalent to approximately $280 billion. The hourly value of volunteer time is based on the average hourly wage of all non-management, non-agricultural workers as determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with a 12 percent increase to estimate for fringe benefits.

Nonprofits common use the value of volunteer time to recognize the contributions of those volunteers, or to demonstrate the level of support the organization has from its community. However, the value of volunteer services can also be used on financial statements — including statements grant proposals, and annual reports — if a volunteer is performing a specialized skill for a nonprofit. The general rule to follow when determining if contributed services meet FASB criteria for financial forms is to determine whether the organization would have purchased the services if they had not been donated. Visit FASB's website for regulations on use of the value of volunteer time on financial forms:
